Sam Howard is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix Holdings, Inc. A native of Marietta, Oklahoma, he is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and Stanford University. While working for General Electric, he was appointed a White House Fellow under President Lyndon Johnson to serve as special assistant to United Nations Ambassador Arthur Goldberg.
Howard served in the leadership of Howard University, Meharry Medical College, Hospital Affiliates International, and Hospital Corporation of America. He is past national chairman of Easter Seals and past president of the Federation of American Heath Systems. The first African American to serve as the Chairman of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, he also chaired the Metropolitan Convention Center Commission, was a founder and director of 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee, and is currently Chairman of the Urban League of Middle Tennessee.
Howard had received numerous honors including Philanthropist of the Year, Nashvillian of the Year, NAACP Branch Image Award for Lifetime Achievement, Distinguished Businessman of the Year, two President's Achievement Awards from the Federation of American Hospitals, and the Human Relations Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He was also named to two Halls of Fame at Oklahoma State University.
